Variatio XXIV is a canon at the octave, in 9/8 time. This is the only canon of the variations in which the leader alternates between voices in the middle of a section; indeed the leader is answered an octave below in the first half and an octave above in the second.
According to Athanasius Kircher, a canon at the octave corresponds with the rhetorical figure called “Omoioptoton” or “Similiter” (similarly), which consists in the repetition of a statement adopted to emphasize it.
As I do in many other canons, in the repeats, I underline one voice at a time, the leader first, the follower later.
