CategoryBach at my side, Goldberg Variations
Variation XXIII is a lively two-part virtuosic variation for two manuals, in 3/4 time. It begins with the hands chasing one another: the melodic line, made of descending scales and initiated in the left hand is repeated by the right hand, imitating the left at the same pitch, but a quaver late. Later the left hand imitates the right one, and the scales are ascending, not descending.
The second section starts with this similar alternation in short bursts again, then leads to a section of alternating thirds between hands.
The lively spirit of this variation is equal to its virtuosity.
